KAITAIA AIRPORT For the past couple of weeks I’ve spoken of the need to get the representatives of Ngaitakoto, Ngati Kahu, the Far North District Council and the Minister of Treaty Settlements together to discuss the future of the Kaitaia Airport. Well, last Friday, thanks to the chairman of the Board, I managed to get them all together at Te Rangi Aniwaniwa, the first time they had all met at the airport. After a “frank and open”, sometimes humorous sometimes harsh, discussion of the different points of view, there was an agreement to table all the relevant information at the next meeting... [Read the full story]

Government Doesn’t Care About Child Poverty

January 26, 2012 · Comment

“Government’s pledge to do something about poverty is bullshit” said MANA leader Hone Harawira, “and their forcing the Aupouri Maori Trust Board to stop feeding hungry kids as part of their Social Workers in Schools contract, proves it.” Harawira said that for the past four years the Aupouri Maori Trust Board had been providing free lunches to hungry kids in Kaitaia every day, but the government had forced them to stop doing it ‘because it was outside of contractual obligations.’ “Aupouri have been an inspiration really,” said Harawira. “They... [Read the full story]

What’s in an Oath?

December 19, 2011 · Comment

Tomorrow parliament gets started with the swearing in of all MPs, which raises an issue that has quite some significance for me personally, and I think, for us as a nation, the oath of allegiance. When I came back to parliament after winning the Tai Tokerau by-election as the new MANA MP, the Speaker booted me out of the house for swearing allegiance to the Treaty of Waitangi and the people of Tai Tokerau before the Queen of England. I copped some flak from the Tories and their Maori Party colleagues, but the positive side was the wide-ranging debate in the media about the oath itself and whether... [Read the full story]

Smith had a choice over Hone’s oath | National Business Review

July 17, 2011 · 5 Comments

Bryce Edwards | Friday July 15, 2011 Hone Harawira’s non-swearing in yesterday has predictably generated a lot of comment. While Harawira won’t be upset by the furore, the widespread assumption that this was a deliberate stunt aimed at getting him thrown out of parliament is almost certainly wrong. Andrew Geddis (What if Hone had crossed his fingers?) is clear that the outcome was of Lockwood Smith’s choosing: ‘the decision to stop Mr Harawira and tell him he needs to come back on another occasion to take the oath/affirmation properly was not legally required... [Read the full story]

Tobacco Point-of-sale Advertising – Rationale for Ban

Tobacco Point-of-sale Advertising – Rationale for Ban

December 9, 2010 · 1 Comment

3. HONE HARAWIRA (Māori Party—Te Tai Tokerau) to the Associate Minister of Health: What is the rationale behind the move to prohibit the display of tobacco products for sale in retail outlets? Hon TARIANA TURIA (Associate Minister of Health) : The Government is serious about saving lives and reducing harm caused by smoking. A growing body of evidence shows that tobacco displays prompt impulse purchasing. There is a clear link between displays and young people taking up smoking. It is vital that we do more to help people quit smoking and to stop young people from being tempted to take up the... [Read the full story]

“It’s not often I agree with Fonterra but the news today that they are going to pilot their Milk for Schools Programme in Northland by giving 110 schools and 14,000 children free milk is great news” says MANA Leader and MP for Te Tai Tokerau Hone Harawira. “One of the policies of MANA is to...
