The Tai Tokerau electorate
Our electorate encompasses Northland and part of the Auckland region – extends from Cape Reinga in the north to the northern fringes of Auckland city in the south.
It includes the communities of North Shore City, part of Waitakere City, Whangārei, Bay of Islands, and Dargaville
In 2001 about a third (33.3%) of the electorate’s Māori descent population had a secondary school qualification as their highest qualification, similar to the New Zealand average (34.5%).
About one third of those employed worked in one of three industries: retail trade (11.9%); manufacturing (11.4%); construction (8.9%).
Election Results
The winning candidate in the 2005 election, Hone Harawira (Māori Party), captured a majority (52.41%) of the 19,012 valid electorate votes cast for candidates in the Te Tai Tokerau electorate.
