Foreshore & Seabed: 31 August
We’re expecting to see the new Foreshore and Seabed bill soon. It’s been a long time coming because basically we’ve been pushing for Maori title and National has been pushing for “public domain” which is just crown ownership in disguise. The Maori Party and the iwi leaders group have been working hard to ensure a [...]

Well, well, well … so it looks like we ain’t going to get what we wanted on the Foreshore and Seabed. That’s a bit of a bummer, but let me lay out where I see things at the moment. In 2008 we got an agreement with National to review Labour’s racist FSSB Act, but what [...]
Repeal of the Foreshore & Seabed
When 50,000 Maori marched on parliament in 2004, it was because we were seriously pissed-off that government was going to deny us our right to put our Foreshore and Seabed claims before the court, by grabbing ownership for themselves – which is exactly what they did when they passed the 2004 Foreshore and Seabed Act. Harawira backs Ngati Whatua over Crest Energy tidal project

I had a really good discussion about what to replace the Foreshore and Seabed Act with last week. Surprisingly, it was with some lawyers (true!), but it also included an old friend and long-serving Maori activist, Annette Sykes. Annette can be kinda scary if you don’t know her – she’s really intense and very passionate [...]
9 March 2010
I’ve been on the road with the Foreshore and Seabed issue for just over a week talking to Maori about what they want after the FSSB Act is repealed, and its been great. The National Council of the Maori Party confirmed Maori Title, No Sale, Access to All as the starting point for the debate [...]

Parliament is a strange place, but who would’ve thought that even though we’re National’s coalition partners, Labour has voted with them more than we have! The differences over the new ACC amendments though are genuine, and we lined up with Labour in opposing National’s ACC plans. It’s already difficult for people to get decent compensation [...]
